Why does NTP burst option is not working in RHEL 5 ?

Issue

  • ntp.conf file have the following line set to enable both iburst and burst mode.
server 1.2.3.4 iburst burst

  • The iburst option appears to be working because there are multiple ntp time request messages thet go to the NTP sever when ntpd first starts. However, at subsequent regular poll interval in the network traffic using tcpdump it appears that only one message is being sent out instead.

  • If the burst option was working it is expected to see 8 messages to go out at each poll interval, according to the man page.
