Why after adding a new NIC card to the system that NIC got loaded with interface name as 'renameX' insteed of normal 'ethX' ?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (Any Version)
  • New NIC added on system.

Issue

  • Installation of new NIC on server was done. That new NIC got detected in the system with interface name as rename10 insteed of normal ethX.
  • What has lead to these name and how can we changed the interface name to normal ethX ?

Resolution

  • Configure NICs by creating appropriate /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ethX files for those newly added NIC with HWADDR directive in them.
  • To find out more detailed information how these files should be configured, refer to Deployment Guide

Root Cause

  • As the newly added NICs were not having ifcfg-ethX files with no HWADDR directive in it, no name could be associated with these interfaces and so they were left with renamexx names because system had no idea what names are desired for them.
