ReaR fails to unmount the OUTPUT_URL mount point with message "ERROR: Unmounting ... failed." or ISO is not bootable on UEFI systems

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When executing rear -v mkbackup or rear -v mkrescue, the following error message is seen after ISO image got created

    ERROR: Unmounting '/tmp/rear.XzSmvu4oN6LDDrL/outputfs' failed.

    Pathname may vary.

  • Alternatively, on UEFI systems, rear mkrescue succeeds but the ISO isn't bootable: selecting the ISO in the UEFI interface goes immediately back to the UEFI interface

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 and later
    • ReaR
    • 3rd party security software (seen with esensor but also falcond and wdavdaemon)
