Running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (RHEL) or Universal Base Image (UBI) 9 container images fail with "Fatal glibc error: CPU does not support x86-64-v2"

Issue

  • When running any container image based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (RHEL9) or Universal Base Image 9 (UBI9), the following error is printed when starting the container:
Fatal glibc error: CPU does not support x86-64-v2
  • The above error can appear either when running podman commands, or may appear within OpenShift environments when containers are started.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 with either Docker or Podman
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 with Podman
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 with Podman
  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 3
  • Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform 4
  • Any container image using either Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 (RHEL9) or Universal Base Image 9 (UBI9) as a base image
