AVX VNNI compile fails with: Error: unsupported instruction `vpdpbusd'

Issue

  • Compiling software using AVX VNNI instructions fails during make with many error lines such as:
/tmp/xxxxxxxx.s:1234: Error: unsupported instruction `vpdpbusd'
/tmp/xxxxxxxx.s:2345: Error: unsupported instruction `vpdpbusd'
/tmp/xxxxxxxx.s:3456: Error: unsupported instruction `vpdpbusd'

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.3
  • GNU Compiler Collection 11.4 - gcc-11.4.1-2.1.el9.x86_64
  • GNU Binutils 2.35 - binutils-2.35.2-42.el9.x86_64
  • CPU supporting AVX512 Vector Neural Network Instructions (VNNI)
    • VPDPBUSD, VPDPBUSDS, VPDPWSSD, VPDPWSSDS
