Why is Automation Controller reporting "Missing or incorrect metadata for controller version" in the logs after server maintenance?

Issue

• Automation Controller servers were patched and rebooted. Afterwards, the UI is showing an error message Internal server error

• Logs within /var/log/supervisor/ are reporting the following error message:

  Exception: Missing or incorrect metadata for controller version.  Ensure controller was installed using the setup playbook.
