Adding force user/group in smb.conf breaks Samba

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Authentication for accessing Samba from Windows client side is done through AD.

  • The share must contain files whose ownership is a local user in linux, so the configuration options force user and force group in /etc/samba/smb.conf are needed.

  • In this configuration, the target shared directory gets not accessible from the Windows client side.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8, 9
  • Samba
    • 4.17.5-2.el8 and later
    • 4.18.6-100.el9
