How to setup a StorageClass with thick disk format with vSphere csi provider in OpenShift 4

Issue

With the legacy (intree) vSphere storage provider it was as easy as changing the diskformat parameter from thin to thick inside the StorageClass but this is not valid anymore with the new vSphere CSI drivers.

Environment

  • Red Hat Openshift Container Platform
    • 4
    • vSphere CSI drivers
  • vSphere
    • 7.0 Update 3L or greater for vSAN datastores
    • 8.0 Update 2 or greater for non vSAN datastores (VMFS)
