CIFS mount returns mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system even if the cifs module is loaded

Issue

• When mounting cifs manually I am getting errors:

  # mount.cifs -o username=user,password=userpassword //samba.example.com/cifs  /mnt/cifs  -vvv
  mount error: cifs filesystem not supported by the system
  mount error(19): No such device
  Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) and kernel log messages (dmesg)
