IBM z - How to disable and enable High Performance FICON to dasd device on RHEL

Issue

High Performance FICON for z Systems (zHPF) is an enhancement to the IBM FICON architecture to offload I/O management processing from the z Systems channel subsystem to the Host Adapter and controller.

Sometimes this feature may need to get disabled for troubleshooting purposes or for obtaining performance comparison data.

How does one disable this feature and later enable it back again?

Environment

  • IBM z Series (s390x) system with
  • DASD storage devices connected via FICON
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, 8,9
