jmap fails due to RuntimeException "can't determine target's VM version"

Issue

When I try to connect to a java process using jmap command to create a heap dump for the process, jmap sometimes throws the following exception and fails.

Error attaching to process: java.lang.RuntimeException: can't determine target's VM version : field "_reserve_for_allocation_prefetch" not found in type Abstract_VM_Version
