mariadb-secure-installation script fails to set root password

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After running the mariadb-secure-installation script with no errors -> setting the root password -> the root user is still able to login without a password.
  • If a password is specified when logging in as the root user, then any input is accepted (no password, incorrect password, correct password) and the root user is logged in.
  • mariadb-secure-installation didn't disable unix_socket authentication.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
  • mariadb-10.5
