CUPS in RHEL crashes while adding printer

Issue

  • System log data show that cupsd crashed three times today:

    Dec 20 11:59:28 cr2appde306p cupsd: *** buffer overflow detected ***: /usr/sbin/cupsd terminated
    Dec 20 14:01:09 cr2appde306p cupsd: *** buffer overflow detected ***: /usr/sbin/cupsd terminated
    Dec 20 15:20:06 cr2appde306p cupsd: *** buffer overflow detected ***: /usr/sbin/cupsd terminated
    
  • CUPS crashes while adding a print queue and must be restarted manually.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7, 8, 9
  • Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) 1.6.3, 2.2.6, 2.3.3
