Openssl error invalid digest:crypto

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

When trying to verify a certificate with openssl, the output is a digest error:

$ /usr/bin/openssl verify --verbose -CAfile ca_authority_file certificate_to_verify.txt

error certificate_to_verify.txt: verification failed
[..skip...]:digital envelope routines:do_sigver_init:invalid digest:crypto/evp/m_sigver.c:333:
[..skip...]:asn1 encoding routines:ASN1_item_verify_ctx:EVP lib:crypto/asn1/a_verify.c:201:

In this case, we use an external certification authority for the verification process.
