Why is "BootCurrent" parameter missing in "efibootmgr" command output?

Issue

The efibootmgr command does not show BootCurrent parameter in RHEL running on VMware guest:

$ efibootmgr 
BootOrder: 0001,0010,0011
Boot0001* Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Boot0010  Setup
Boot0011  Boot Menu
