RHEL 8.6 system hangs during shutdown

Issue

  • Several machines (DELL Poweredge R7415) hang on issuing reboot or shutdown.
    At the time of hang, console logs shows following messages:

    [    54.268514] sd 2:0:0:0: [sdb] Synchronizing SCSI cache
    [    54.269285] sd 1:0:0:0: [sda] Synchronizing SCSI cache
    [    54.348267] mpt3sas_cm0: mpt3sas_base_make_ioc_ready
    [    54.349057] mpt3sas_cm0: sending message unit reset!!
    [    54.351669] mpt3sas_cm0: message unit reset: SUCCESS
    

    This issue is observed only after updating the system to RHEL 8.6 kernel-4.18.0-372.9.1.el8 or later.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8
    • kernel-4.18.0-372.9.1.el8 and later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9
    • kernel version older than 5.14.0-362.8.1.el9_3
  • Dell PowerEdge R7415 server with LS7A chipset
