Update option is not shown in adminstration section of Openshift Console

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Azure Red Hat OpenShift [ARO]
    • 3.11

Issue

  • The Update option is not available for ARO 3.11 cluster to upgrade to ARO 4.x cluster.
  • There is no option mentioned for ARO 3.11 cluster in the ARO official documentation also.

Resolution

To migrate workload from ARO 3.11 to ARO 4.x, refer the official ARO documentation.

Root Cause

  • The ARO official documentation for cluster upgradation is for OpenShift 4.x onwards.
  • There is no upgrade path from 3.x to 4.x cluster as OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) 4.x introduces architectural changes and enhancements. The procedures used to manage OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) 3.x clusters might not apply to OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) 4.x, hence it is not possible to upgrade existing OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) 3.x cluster to OpenShift Container Platform (OCP) 4.x.
  • For more details refer the OCP documentation.
