LVM unable to use device with message "dev_is_mpath_component /dev/sdb multipath wwid <>" or "Cannot use /dev/sdb: device is a multipath component"

Issue

• LVM unable to use a device showing dev_is_mpath_component message:

  Opened /dev/sdb RO O_DIRECT
  /dev/sdb: size is 31244943360 sectors
  Closed /dev/sdb
  dev_is_mpath_component /dev/sdb multipath wwid 62cea7f0444ee100273d727bcc8287b6

• LVM unable to use device:

[root@host]# vgcreate vg1 /dev/sdb 
  Cannot use /dev/sdb: device is a multipath component
  Command requires all devices to be found.
