Why is my system not booting with newer RHEL6 kernels and more than 305 cpus activated?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • My system with many logical cpus boots with RHEL6 kernels, yet RHEL6.1 kernels (2.6.32-131.0.15.el6) and later only boot successfully when the number of usable cpus is limited using the kernel option 'maxcpus=305'.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • kernel 2.6.32-131.0.15.el6 and later

  • hardware with more than 300 logical cpus

  • hardware of affected system: 4 'Bull Novascale Bullion server' interconnected via XQPI, presenting as 16 numa nodes server, incl. hyperthreading 320 logical cpus
