Why am I seeing "unknown filesystem type" when attempting to mount a filesystem?

Issue

  • mount -a fails to mount a filesystem and displays messages similar to the following:
mount: /nfs : unknown filesystem type 'nfs '
mount: /cifs: unknown filesystem type 'cifs '.
mount: /xfs: unknown filesystem type 'xfs '.
mount: /ext4: unknown filesystem type ' ext4'.
