Memory leak in lan78xx NIC driver used in bridge

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

Given two lan78xx-enabled NICs configured in bridge, transferring data across those with a speed of 500+ Mbps in 450–650 byte frames causes spike in memory consumption and OOM. Such a memory usage is not visibly attributed to a known consumer. The system may finally crash with the System is deadlocked on memory message.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.5
  • lan78xx-enabled NIC
