Unix group membership information disappears when a group has about 128 members

Issue

When a group has about 128 members, the group membership information is no longer handled correctly. In particular, running id on a user in the group does not show their group membership.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6

  • glibc-2.12-1.25.el6_1.3 or newer, including glibc-2.12-1.47.el6 (from RHSA-2011-1526); Name Service Switch (NSS) configured (through /etc/nsswitch.conf) to use the files backend for group information,
    or

  • nss_db-2.2.3-0.3.pre1.el6_1.1 or newer; NSS configured to use the db backend for group information.
