kdump fails to create a crash dump on local disk

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Our current standard for RHEL5 is to have kdump set up to use local disk space for dumps.  While investigating other issues we have found that kdump is unable to successfully write core files on crash.  The issue appears to be a problem with the process mounting the local disk space to use for the core dump.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • The 'cciss' module being used for local storage (HP Smart Array)
  • The kdump service configured to save vmcore to local storage
