Some OEM SSD Models Manufactured before March, 2020 fail after 40,000 hours

Issue

  • Cisco, Dell, HPE, and possibly other system vendors offer SSDs in their server hardware that can suddenly and irrevocably fail when running older firmware.
  • In early 2020, Cisco, Dell, and HPE reported a firmware bug that makes some of their OEM SSDs fail after 40,000 hours.
  • These SSDs are unrecoverable after they fail. All data is lost.

Environment

  • Systems using SanDisk OEM SSD models built prior to March, 2020, specified by Cisco, Dell, HPE, and possibly others
  • All versions of all operating systems
