Xorg Freezes when using Firefox and the proprietary NVIDIA driver

Issue

  • Screen freezes and hangs when running or scrolling in Firefox; though, the system can be accessed remotely.

  • The following messages show in /var/log/Xorg.0.log when the X server starts:

    [   802.103] (**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling 2D acceleration
    [   802.103] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
    [   802.103] (EE) NVIDIA(0):     log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
    [   802.103] (EE) NVIDIA(0):     server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module.  If
    [   802.103] (EE) NVIDIA(0):     you continue to encounter problems, Please try
    [   802.103] (EE) NVIDIA(0):     reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.
    
  • After updates or installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5 or later, using Firefox hangs the screen and Xorg must be restarted.

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • NVIDIA proprietary video driver
  • firefox, xulrunner, other applications using OpenGL.
