Why do I periodically see my quorum device heuristic in the process list as <defunct> in a RHEL 5 or 6 cluster?

Issue

  • A two node cluster is showing the heuristic processes as defunct. No fencing or failover occurs.
  • Why do I periodically see a <defunct> process in ps output corresponding to my heuristic?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 or 6 with the High Availability Add On
  • Cluster configured with one or more quorum device heuristics (<quorumd><heuristic/></quorumd> in `/etc/cluster/cluster.conf)
