"multipath -d" shows mpath devices but they aren't created on Red Hat Enteprise Linux 5

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • When the multipath -d command is run, it finds the device but states  its in a [undef] state and therefore it isn't added when the command is  actually run.  I'm wondering how we could possibly instate this path and  get it functioning again.
    sh-3.2# multipath -d
    create: mpath0 (360000970000194901135533030334542)  EMC,SYMMETRIX
    [size=34G][features=0][hwhandler=0][n/a]
    \_ round-robin 0 [prio=2][undef]
     \_ 0:0:0:0 sda 8:0   [undef][ready]
     \_ 1:0:0:0 sde 8:64  [undef][ready]

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • device-mapper-multipath root disk from SAN
  • Attempting to use mdraid on top of device-mapper-multipath devices:
    /dev/sda1 -|
    /dev/sdc1 -|=> /dev/mapper/mpath0p1 -|
                                         |==> /dev/md0
    /dev/sdb1 -|=> /dev/mapper/mpath1p1 -|
    /dev/sdd1 -|
