modprobe or insmod errors with "Required key not available"

Issue

  • When loading a kernel driver module with modprobe or insmod, the module load fails, and the following error is displayed:
FATAL: Error inserting <modulename>: Required key not available
insmod: error inserting <modulename>: -1 Required key not available

  • modprobe or insmod
  • Kernel module not shipped in this Red Hat Enterprise Linux kernel package
