Why does the JBoss twiddle.sh and shutdown.sh scripts fail with authentication errors when the Java security manager is enabled?

Issue

Why does the JBoss twiddle.sh and shutdown.sh scripts fail with authentication errors when the Java security manager is enabled?  I am passing in the username (-u) and password (-p) on the command line.  If I disable the Java security manager, then the scripts work fine.
