How can I get the progress of init displayed on the console by default?

Issue

  • How can I get the progress of init displayed on the console by default?
  • If I press the F1 or Esc key, I am able to watch the progress of /sbin/init as it brings up the system services in real time. I have been looking for way to make this the default boot behaviour, a way to suppress the the GUI splash screen that displays "Red Hat Enterprise Linux" and instead just show the progress being made as /sbin/init progresses while starting up all services.
  • I would like to be able to observe in real time (as it happens, by default, on the screen) the same textual status which gets logged into /var/log/boot.log.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
