“telinit q” does not start services defined in /etc/inittab in RHEL 6

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • telinit q does not start services defined in /etc/inittab.
  • In RHEL 6, /etc/inittab file is deprecated, and is now used only for setting up the default runlevel via the initdefault line.

Traditional behavior of SysV init, as provided in RHEL 4 & 5, allowed a respawning service to be defined in /etc/inittab in a format as follows:

M:3:respawn:/etc/init.d/mytest [ARGS]

The command telinit q could then be used to tel init to reload the configuration file /etc/inittab and automatically start any new services added. However, this functionality has been deprecated in RHEL 6 as explained below.
