Requests to httpd fail, logging an "Invalid method in request" error

We make a request to our httpd server like https://servername:80/ and it fails. The following error is logged on httpd:
[error] [client 127.0.0.1] Invalid method in request \x16\x03\x01
Environment
- JBoss Enterprise Web Server (EWS)
- Apache httpd
