Device mount by label fails with mirrored logical volume or multipath device after device-name change in RHEL 5.6 or earlier

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • When using mount by label on mirrored Logical Volumes, if the LVM metadata changes (in this case a vgrename, but many other permutations exist including volume creates/destroys) mount by label fails attempting to mount an LVM mirror leg instead of the mirror parent with the error:

mount: /dev/mapper/vg-lv_mimage_0 already already mounted or /mount/point busy

The device listed is one of the mirror legs, rather than the actual logical volume.

  • Mounting a filesystem via label fails when the device is a multipath map or contains more than one path to the same device

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 Update 6
  • e2fsprogs prior to 1.39-33.el5
