GRUB unable to detect bootable OS
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.10
Issue
- After OS patching to RHEL 5.10 one server was unable to detect bootable partition.
Booting into rescue mode was slow and unreliable via ILO.
Booting with 3rd party grub utility was successful and the OS is bootable after enabling LVM support and booting via 3rd party util - Super Grub2 Disk.
What happened during patching?
What is the recommended process to repair the booted OS?
Resolution
/boot was corrupted. Ran fsck on this device and copied missing files again.
Root Cause
File system corruption caused /boot not to mount.
