MYSQL will not start producing "Another MySQL daemon already running with the same unix socket." message

Issue

  • In our environment we had run cluster fencing tests, after hard-reboot our MySQL will not start.
[root@hostname ~]# service mysqld status
mysqld is stopped
[root@hostname ~]# service mysqld start
Another MySQL daemon already running with the same unix socket.
Starting mysqld:                                           [FAILED]
[root@hostname ~]#

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • mysql
