Why is emacs utilizing much memory and CPU on RHEL6?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Emacs is consuming CPU/memory resources after it was
    1. started on a remote host and set to run in the background
    2. the ssh session to the remote host was terminated (i.e. 'kill <pid_of_sshsession>')

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • emacs packages of version < 23.1-21.el6_2.1

  • emacs on remote host via SSH
