winbindd or kinit uses 100% CPU, stuck in krb5_sendto_kdc

Issue

The winbindd process uses 100% CPU on our servers on occasion.
After a service restart its CPU usage drops, but only temporary.

This problem may also be seen when using kinit

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3
  • samba-3.6.9-155 and newer
  • libtevent-0.9.18 and newer
  • krb5-libs package older than 1.10.3-10.el6, Including RHEL5 versions
