mysqld memcached - lock down port 11211?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Using MySQL server with memcached opens a port of 11211 (tcp and/or udp) to any remote (within our network) system.

  • Apart from using iptables, is there any configuration we can use (in my.cnf or otherwise) to limit the IP addresses to which mysql/memcached will respond?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6
  • mysql
  • memcached
