nscd dead but subsys locked

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • Server (out of around 100) every one week or so causes login issues and takes about 30min or so to login.
  • To resolve the issue, once login to that server and stop the nscd daemon and then everything comes back to normal state.
  • All the servers are running same OS installed from same kickstart image and hardware is also same but its causing problem on one server only.

  • Some preliminary information from that server:

[root@server1 ~]# nscd -V
nscd (GNU libc) 2.5

  • Here is the issue:

[root@server1 /home]# service nscd status
nscd dead but subsys locked

[root@server1 /home]# service nscd restart
Stopping nscd:                                            [FAILED]
Starting nscd:                                              [OK ]

[root@server1 /home]# service nscd status
nscd (pid 21714) is running...

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3
  • Kernel 2.6.18-128.7.1.el5
  • nscd-2.5-34-x86_64
