pam_faillock does not unlock account

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • pam_faillock is enabled to lock accounts after failed authentication attempts
  • Custom directory is set in/etc/security/faillock.conf

    dir=/var/log/faillock
    
  • User account has been locked by pam_faillock, however, running faillock --user bob --reset fails to unlock the account

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.6 or earlier
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.0 only
    • pam
