Add a method to open arbitrary files from nautilus with an application or script.

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • Need an easy-to-use method to open arbitrary files from nautilus with an application or script, which is not maintained by the rpm database.

    Current Behavior

    • Right click on my file -> Open with other application
neither View All Applications nor Find New Applications allows to select a custom tool/scrip/binary to use for opening my file.

    Desired behavior

    • Right click on a my file -> Open with other application
    • Choose a button like Open with custom application which opens a dialog for selecting executable files from my file system, e.g. a Python script or an application taken from a tarball.
    • After selecting the executable it is used to open the initially selected file, the selection is saved somewhere.
    • The next time when right click that file (or better any file), need option to choose Open with other application again and the previously chosen executable is directly available for selection.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.4
  • nautilus-3.28.1-15.el8.x86_64.rpm
