IP packets get fragmented when the ICMP payload size matches with the MTU

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Network monitoring, e.g. tcpdump, shows packet fragmentation when the ICMP payload packet size matches with the configured MTU.

  • If the MTU is set to 1500, fragmentation is monitored when:

    • IPv4 is used and the packet size for ping is set higher than 1472.
    • IPv6 is used and the packet size for ping is set higher than 1452.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
