Why systemd automount shares hangs on autofs4_expire_wait?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • x-systemd.automount's NFS shares hang after indeterminate amount of time with or without active I/O. Recovery is not possible without reboot.
  • Commands like df -h would result in a hang.
  • These occur only if a specific timeout is mentioned in the mount options inside /etc/fstab or the unit file:

    nfs-server:/export /nfs/mount nfs defaults,x-systemd.automount,x-systemd.idle-timeout=300 0 0

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
  • systemd
