How to make the discard option effective on the root filesystem

Issue

  • Even though discard mount option is added in fstab, it does not apply for the root partition.
 /                       xfs     defaults,discard        0 0
 /boot                   xfs     defaults,discard        0 0

 /dev/mapper/mpathb2 on / type xfs (rw,relatime,attr2,inode64,noquota)
 /dev/mapper/mpathb1 on /boot type xfs (rw,relatime,attr2,discard,inode64,noquota)
  • Not able to set discard on ( / ) root filesystem
