AltGr and other keys do not work as expected when logging in over VNC and GDM

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When a VNC server has been configured as directed by How do I setup VNC based on xinetd with XDMCP for GDM?, the AltGr key does not work as it should. I.e. on German keyboards typing AltGr + q should give a @ symbol.

  • When connected to the VNCserver from another RedHat client using vnclient, some characters are not interpreted. In particular pipe | which is very usefull in a Linux console. I.e.on French keyboard (Azerty) the problem concerns the keys using AltrGr in conjonction with another key on the keyboard.

Environment

  • VNC server running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6
  • VNC client running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and 6, but some other clients are affected as well
