Where is the hwbrowser utility in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
Issue
-
I am working on a new installation of RHEL6, and am looking in the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.0 Deployment guide for help. It states on page 349, that to list the hardware installed on the system, select 'System'>'Administration'>'Hardware' or type 'hwbrowser'. Neither of these are available on my RHEL 6.0 system. Where is the command? How do I install it?

How to install hwbrowser utility in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.X ?
Resolution
- The 'hwbrowser' tool is currently not available in Red Hat Enterprise linux 6 and later version however, it is possible to get similar results of the command by browsing the content of the /sys file system e.g.
tree -C /sys | less -R
- ...and using the udevadm utility, e.g
udevadm info -q all -n /dev/sda
Root Cause
- Both hwbrowser and hal-device-manager are obsolete and are no longer available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. Also at the moment, there is no replacement for these utilities available. Consequently, we have removed description of these utilities from the chapter.
