Multipath devices missing symlinks or other multipath related mappings

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Device timeouts or other issues during reboot caused by missing multipath partition mappings or missing symlinks associated with the multipath device itself. Note, only the symlinks or the dmsetup info are missing; the partition, itself, is still intact on-disk and the base multipath device is healthy.
  • All VG does not get activated automatically during reboot, but may be activated post boot without issue.
  • System is logging timed out waiting for device dev-mapper during boot up
  • On RHEL8, the system enters emergency/maintenance mode sometimes when the multipath pv is in use.

    systemd[1]: dev-mapper-vg\lv.device: Job dev-mapper-vg\lv.device/start timed out.
systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device dev-mapper-vg\x2lv.device
