Can I use transparent filesystem compression in Red Hat Enterprise Linux?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • I'd like to implement transparent compression on ext3 partition. I read about "Support for transparent compression is available as an unofficial patch for ext3. This patch is a direct port of e2compr and still needs further development, it compiles and boots well with upstream kernels but journaling is not implemented yet. The current patch is named e3compr"

  • Other than e2compr or e3compr are there any other solutions for transparent filesystem compression? Do you suggest any FS which supports transparent compression naturally?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (all versions)
