Discrepancy Between Security Errata Applicable Status in All Hosts Page and Installable Updates in Content Hosts Page in Red Hat Satellite

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Satellite 6

Issue

  • In Red Hat Satellite WebUI, a registered host shows Security Errata Applicable status in the All Hosts view, but no errata are listed as Installable Updates in the Content Hosts view.

Observed behavior:

  • Navigate to Satellite WebUI → Hosts → All Hosts

  • Hover over the Error Status Icon next to the hostname.

  • The tooltip shows Security Errata Applicable

  • Alternatively, click the host → Host Status → Error Statuses, which also displays Security Errata Applicable

  • Navigate to Satellite WebUI → Hosts → Content Hosts

  • The Installable Updates column for the same host shows no errata.

This results in an apparent discrepancy between host status and available installable errata.

Resolution

  • Identify the Content View and Lifecycle Environment associated with the affected host:

    • Navigate to Satellite WebUI → Hosts → Content Hosts

    • Click on the host name

    • On the Overview tab, locate Content view environment, which shows the associated Content View and Lifecycle Environment

    • Alternatively run # subscription-manager identity command on registered host to identify the associated Content View and Lifecycle Environment

  • Publish and promote a new version of the associated Content View:

    • Navigate to Satellite WebUI → Content → Lifecycle → Content Views

    • Click on the name of the identified Content View

    • Click Publish New Version

    • On the publish page, toggle ON Promote

    • Select the required Lifecycle Environments

    • Click Next, then Finish

  • Wait for the Content View Publish/Promote task to complete successfully (without warnings or errors).

Once the Content View is published and promoted, the applicable errata will become installable, and the Installable Updates column will reflect the correct errata count.

Root Cause

This behavior is expected and occurs due to the distinction between Applicable Errata and Installable Errata in Red Hat Satellite.

Applicable Errata
Errata that apply to packages installed on the host. These errata are detected based on installed package versions but are not yet available for installation until they are included in the Content View version promoted to the host’s Lifecycle Environment.

Installable Errata
Errata that are both applicable to the host and available in the host’s assigned Content View and Lifecycle Environment, making them ready for installation.

In this scenario, the errata are applicable to the host but have not been published and promoted in the associated Content View, so they do not appear as installable updates.

Diagnostic Steps

  • Verify the host status:

    • Navigate to Hosts → All Hosts

    • Check the host status icon or Error Statuses for Security Errata Applicable

  • Verify installable errata:

    • Navigate to Hosts → Content Hosts

    • Check the Installable Updates column for the affected host

  • Confirm Content View and Lifecycle Environment:

    • Navigate to Hosts → Content Hosts → <host> → Overview

    • Note the Content view environment

  • Check Content View history:

    • Navigate to Content → Lifecycle → Content Views

    • Verify whether a newer Content View version containing the errata has been published and promoted to the required Lifecycle Environment
