How do I loopback mount .vmdk images containing LVM volumes?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

We have a need for a method of mounting disk image files (VMware single-file .vmdk images) that has the following partition layout on them. Is this technically possible? If so, how?

primary partition 1:  /boot file system
primary partition 2:  LVM PV for rootvg volume group

It's the contents of the logical volumes inside the rootvg that we want to get hold of.
